Mother Teresa, founder of the Missionaries of Charity, was a loving friend and caring woman to the poorest of the poor. Her spirituality, relationship with God, and service to others is an ideal for all of us.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven… Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God (Matt. 5: 3-9).”
A key component of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School’s mission is to graduate students who are dedicated to providing service to others as Mother Teresa did. Christian service hours are considered part of the eighth grade religion curriculum at MTC and provide opportunities for students to directly experience Catholic Social Teachings by serving others.
Each trimester, students are to complete six service hours. At the end of each trimester, students are required to submit their Christian Service Hour Log and a two page reflection essay about their service experience to Mrs. Ruelf, eighth grade religion teacher. Please see due dates below. The Christian Service Reflection Paper will constitute one summative religion assessment grade and one summative ELA grade for each trimester. Service hours are to be performed for non-profit organizations such as parishes, schools, nursing homes, Humane Society, Metropolitan Ministries, etc. Students may earn service at MTC by assisting teachers before or after school, or by serving as a safety patrol before or after school, or as an altar server for school Masses or for Masses on Sundays or holy days of obligation at his/her parish. Service hour requirements for Trimester 1 can be fulfilled over the summer prior to entering eighth grade.
